It’s very rare for me to come across a band that intrigues me in such a way for me to say “I will love this band for the rest of my life”. There are many on my list. But most of them came from the mid to late nineties and early 21st century. It’s not so easy for me to say that about more recent bands. There has to be something especially magical about them. Maybe it’s timing? Coming into my life at that perfect moment when I need that or want that? The past 5 to 6 years I’ve kind of just recycled my favorites from the past with the occasional catchy album that eventually gets thrown into the disposable pile.

I got into The National’s album ‘Alligator’ I’m thinking back in 2006. It came out in 2005. It took me about a month to get into but I feel privileged that I did. I thanked my friend probably over 100 times for introducing me. The lyrics on ‘Alligator’ are extremely clever, hypnotizing to say the least, and put me in a trance with every listen. To me, there is something magical about this band. Sincerity? Honestly? Feeling? Not sure. But I know one thing, you will never see one of their albums in my pile of forgottens.

This song, About Today, is from their 2004 release the ‘Cherry Tree EP”. This version, though, was recorded live and put on their 2008 release ‘The Virginia EP”. It’s one reason I can say I’ll be a fan for life.
